At the celebration of the Grand
Forks Art Gallery's 25th Anniversary on June 13, 2009, Beverley
and I were totally surprised, shocked, astonished - when a presentation
was made naming the main gallery in the gallery's new premises
the Richard and Beverley Reid Gallery. We
feel deeply honoured.

For several months
in 2008, I was actively engaged with a GFAG board committee,
city planners and the architects in the design and development
of the new premises for the Grand Forks Art Gallery The city
has done an excellent renovation to this substantial and well
maintained historic 1911 Courthouse building.
2008 - I was recently visiting
an artist friend, Nora Curiston, and her husband Dave Soroka.
We were discussing one of her works - a painting of her dog.
She asked if I had ever painted dogs. I replied "yes, but
the painitng is missing". Dave was so interested in this,
wondering what may have happened to the work, that he connected
with CBC the next day. This resulted in an
interview with CBC's Mark Forsythe (April 14/08), and a subsequent
query to the world out there, that the painting may be somewhere
- in someone's attic or wherever. So far, I have heard nothing
as to its whereabouts.
Here's a link to the missing painting.
August, 2006. I spent
about two weeks in Wells, BC at the Island
Mountain Arts Summer School of the Arts. Its always
a pleasure to work among a group of enthusiastic artists. I
had never visited the Wells/Barkerville area before. After a
slow start in new surroundings, I did manage to get several new
paintings underway, and have been continuing since my return.
Three of these are in the exhibition Inside Passage
at the Grand Forks Art Gallery (see above)

After dealing with
frozen pipes, I have replaced about half the siding on the studio
to reduce the infiltration of cold air. I hope to complete
this job later this year (well - maybe next year!!) So
the building which began life as a grocery store many years ago
is now nearly ideal as a spacious and functioning studio.
Richard Reid was inducted as a
member of the Royal
Canadian Academy of Arts along with 35 other artists, architects,
designers, etc. from across Canada at the 124th Annual General
Assembly of the RCA at Vancouver, May 29, 2004.
I was very surprised to receive the following
message on April 19, 2005:
"On behalf of the Assembly of BC Arts Councils, I'm very
pleased to inform you that you
have been awarded a 2005 Arts & Culture Week Community Arts
Champion Award. The
award is given out annually to individuals and organizations
who demonstrate outstanding
leadership and have made significant contributions to schools
and communities through
exceptional support for arts and culture programs, initiatives
and collaborations."
"Your name was selected as an Arts in
Community Champion under the following criteria:
- leadership in developing community partnerships to develop
and sustain the contribution
of arts and culture to our province.

partnerships connecting
the arts with other sectors of the community.

of community
development

.......... I would like to thank the Assembly
of BC Arts Councils for honouring me with this
award ..... Richard

Revised artist
statement.
An 'artist statement'
is intended to convey in words a sense of what the paintings
are all about. Even after many attempts, it never seems
to be quite right. I suppose that 'words' are not really
the right medium, unlike the paint itself. But I have once again
revised my comments. I welcome your comments. rr
